MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL

This is last of the "America the Beautiful" quarters for this year.
It was sculpted out of solid granite rock on the side of a mountain and features the heads of former presidents; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
In the view shown, Washington is on the left and Jefferson on the right.
It is located is the scenic Black Hills of South Dakota. Many of you have visited this National Memorial and are amazed at the monumental task started by Gutzon Borglum in 1927 and finished by his son, Lincoln, in 1941, to create this masterpiece.
What's even more amazing is that when he started with Washington he didn't like where it was on the mountain and decided to start over.
The original idea was to show each person from head to waist. However, lack of funds meant lack of sculpting and now only the heads show.
When it is raining it appears as though the presidents are crying.
At the base of the mountain can be seen all the rock debris from the process.
Bags and rolls of these quarters are being released November 4th.

FORT MCHENRY NATIONAL MONUMENT AND HISTORIC SHRINE

Fort McHenry is the birthplace of our National Anthem and named for James McHenry, our nation's second Secretary of War.
Following the burning of our National Capitol in 1814, British forces attacked Baltimore. Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry while under British guard on an American truce ship in the Patapsco River. Seeing the country's flag still flying over the fort the next morning he was moved and so wrote "The Star Spangled Banner".
It was established as a national site 1925.
The reverse represents the site during the "Defenders Day" celebration held here each year. The fireworks signal the "rockets red glare", linking the fort to its historic past.
Bags and rolls are now available.
