GEORGE ROGERS CLARK NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

This is the last "new" quarter to come out this year.
The park contains the George Rogers Clark Memorial which
commemorates Clark's achievements during the American Revolution.
The quarter depicts Lieutenant Colonel Clark leading his men through
swampy grounds as they make a bold and surprising attack to
overtake Ft. Sackville, Indiana, from the British in 1779.
His accomplishments in the Mid-West and West during the war
was the main reason why the British ceded the Northwest Territory
to the US.

victory at Vincennes, only 2 miles away, which was part of the
Sackville raid.

ELLIS ISLAND

The Ellis Island quarter is now out.
This was the hub of immigration. Foreigners would come here first, be documented and sent on their way to all parts of their new world in the hopes of a better life.
Ellis Island, a popular tourist destination today, operated from 1892 to 1954, issuing papers to as many as 5,000 immigrants per day.
Originally a fort and federal arsenal in the early 1800's, Ellis Island was documenting over one million people of all nationalities and countries.

OZARK NATIONAL SCENIC WATERWAYS
This reverse features Alley Mill, a steal roller mill built in 1894. It was used to convert wheat into flour. FREDERICK DOUGLAS NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

The second of the quarters to be issued this year pays tribute to Frederick Douglas, a staunch voice for the slaves.
This coin shows him at his desk with his Washington DC home in the background.
Born in 1818 Frederick Douglas was a slave who became literate and as a teen began educating other slaves. He later became a staunch advocate for the abolition of slavery.
He became widely respected as a free American fighting for civil rights.
He served in many capacities including US Marshall, Minister to Haiti and Charge d'Affaires to the Dominican Republic.

EFFIGY MOUNDS NATIONAL MONUMENT
This is the first of the 2017 quarters. It depicts an aerial view of the Native American Mounds in the Marching Bear Group. These are earthen mounds built by the Indians 1,000 years ago and number over 200 and are spread across, not only Iowa, but parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. They provide knowledge of social and business life of these people. The mounds were built in the shape of bears, birds and other animals and one such area spans a quarter of a mile. The park visitors center is in Harpers Ferry, Iowa - heard that name before. Bags and rolls are now available from the mint. |
